After nearly two decades of connecting people around the globe, Microsoft has announced the official shutdown of Skype, effective later this year in 2025. Once the go-to platform for video calls and messaging, Skype will be phased out as Microsoft shifts its focus entirely to Microsoft Teams and other integrated communication tools.

According to the official statement, support for Skype will gradually end over the coming months, with final shutdown operations expected to complete by the end of 2025. Users are being encouraged to export their data and transition to alternative services.

Skype played a pivotal role in shaping online communication, particularly during the early 2000s, and remained relevant through the rise of remote work during the pandemic. However, the rapid growth of Teams and competition from Zoom, WhatsApp, and Google Meet contributed to Skype’s decline in popularity.

Long-time users have expressed nostalgia and disappointment across social media platforms, with many calling it the “end of an era.” Microsoft has promised migration support and detailed FAQs to help existing users transition smoothly.
